Paul McAuliffe, TD for Dublin North West, has today called for immediate intervention following the revelations of neglect at Beneavin Manor, Glasnevin in last night’s RTÉ Investigates programme.

The documentary highlighted significant mistreatment and abuse of residents in Beneavin Manor, which is owned by Emeis (formerly Orpea).

It demonstrated that in a for-profit model focusing on costs, this can lead to insufficient staffing, poor treatment of care and a culture which doesn’t focus on the dignity and care of older people.

On the findings of last night’s programme, Paul McAuliffe TD said: “Today, I am seeking a briefing from HIQA on the steps they’re taking to address these concerns. HIQA must provide immediate reassurance for families of any residents currently in these nursing homes.

“Additionally, I have asked the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health to convene a meeting to address the serious issues concerning both nursing homes, as raised in the RTÉ Investigates programme.

“The revelations of last night’s programme are alarming, heartbreaking for those receiving care and raise significant questions about the care of older people in these two nursing homes.

“It was incredibly difficult to see people being deprived of very basic services and care.

“There are significant amounts of public money going into Beneavin Manor.

“The issues raised last night just shouldn’t happen and it should not be difficult to alleviate them.

“Many families will have recognised family members last night and they will be angry and need to be supported immediately.

“There will be many families whose relatives have received care there in the past and I am mindful of those people too and not casting doubt on the memories they have about relatives who have passed away.

“However, there are serious questions to be raised as to why people continued to be admitted to Beneavin Manor once issues were flagged to HIQA.

“I understand that the Minister has been advised by HIQA that they will continue to engage with both the Residence Portlaoise and Beneavin Manor and that they will update the Minister and the Department on progress by the end of next week.

“If any family members or staff have further concerns regarding what was revealed in last night’s programme, I would urge them to contact HIQA. HIQA can be contacted by email at concerns@HIQA.ie or by telephone at 021 240 9646.”
