Fingal County Council signs off on cycle projects in Dublin 15

Fingal County Council have signed a contract with RPS consultants for a value of up to €5 million for Pedestrian and Cycling Route Projects in the Dublin 15 area.

The Planning & Strategic Infrastructure Department procured a single party framework for engineering consultancy services with the appointment of RPS Consultants. The initial project identified is the Pedestrian & Cycling Bridge at Granard Bridge, Castleknock Road. This project will form part of the Blanchardstown to Castleknock route which is identified as a primary radial route in the Cycle Network Plan for The Greater Dublin Area.

Welcoming the signing, Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Brian McDonagh said ‘’the project will create a safe and attractive passage for pedestrians and cyclists across the wider Dublin 15 area. It will improve connectivity between the large residential and commercial areas of Blanchardstown/Castleknock and Castleknock Train Station. The benefits for people and the environment will be great!’’

The proposed bridge will be located at Granard Bridge, Castleknock Road, and will cross Dublin Maynooth Railway and the Royal Canal, adjacent to the existing road bridges over the canal and railway. It will provide a minimum clear width of 4.50 metres wide, with access for pedestrians and cyclists only, including wind protection, night lighting and high-quality detailing and execution.

AnnMarie Farrelly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council said ‘’ The Granard Bridge project will be delivered using construction methods that minimize social and environmental impacts, in line with our commitment to sustainable development practices. It offers a cost-effective solution that minimizes future maintenance and, when completed, will be a great asset to the local community’’.

This project will also provide access routes from the bridge north to the Roselawn Road/Castleknock Road junction and south to the Laurel Lodge Road/Castleknock Road junction.
