Swimmer with MND shatters two Guinness World Records in a single day in two countries
Padraig Conlon 02 Sep 2024Mark O’Brien, an inspirational swimmer living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), has made history by breaking two Guinness World Records in two countries in one day.
He achieved this remarkable feat yesterday, Sunday, September 1.
The first record was set at Inspire Luton Sports Village in Luton, UK, where Mark took on the 50m Freestyle at 08:50 AM.
With an incredible time of 36.10 seconds, he shaved two seconds off the previous record of 38.92 seconds, setting the tone for an unforgettable day.
Mark then boarded a flight to Dublin with his team of supporters, where he aimed to break another world record at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin.
With commentary from former Olympic swimmer Andrew Bree, Mark completed the 100m Freestyle in an astonishing time of 1 minute 29.12 seconds, smashing the previous record by ten seconds and cheered on by his Irish family and supporters.
Mark O’Brien’s achievement is not only a testament to his physical capabilities but also to his resounding determination in the face of MND.
Last year, around the same time, Mark also set a world record for the longest non-stop, unaided open water swim by a person with MND, covering an impressive distance of 6.8 miles (11 km).
Kevin Burn, CEO of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA), congratulated Mark on his latest accomplishment:
“Mark’s achievement is truly admirable. Breaking two world records in one day is a phenomenal feat in itself, but to do so while battling MND is inspirational.
“Mark has shown us all the power of perseverance and determination.
“We at IMNDA are incredibly proud of him and grateful for the awareness and support he brings to those living with MND.”
Jim Campion commented “Everyone at Campion Insurance and PIB Group congratulates Mark on what he has achieved.
To break two records, in two different countries in one day is inspiring and highlights Mark’s resilience and strength of character.”
Mark’s record-breaking day also aims to raise vital funds for MND research and support services.
Donations can be made through his GiveWheel fundraising page here.
All funds raised through Mark’s record-breaking efforts will be equally distributed between The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA), The UK Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA), and Challenging MND.
