A FULL quota of 180 will take part in the inaugural Decathlon Ballymun Triathlon this Saturday, July 2.

Consisting of a 750m pool swim, followed by a 20km cycle and a 5km run on a 6km loop course around the Ballymun roads, the event has attracted a number of first timers to the sport of triathlon.

It will be an early start for everyone, with the first of eight “waves” setting off at 7am, with further waves every half hour after that until 10.30am.

Also scheduled is a Try-a-Tri for younger triathletes and complete novices, starting with a shorter 400m swim, followed by a 20km cycle and a 5k run.

The event is the only Dublin-based triathlon this season to have a pool swim.

Taking part in a specially modified event, with indoor rowing substituted for the swim, are ten students of Trinity Comprehensive School, who’ve been training hard for the past three months with GP Tri Coaching, which is based at the school.

Action will continue until about 2pm, with supporters and spectators welcome to come out on to the streets and cheer on the triathletes.

As well as Decathlon, supporters of the Ballymun Triathlon include GP Tri Coaching, the Ballymun Health and Fitness Group, DCC, Trinity Comprehensive School, Nan’s SuperValu, BRYR, An Garda Siochana and The Rediscovery Centre.

Race HQ on the day is Ballymun Leisure Centre, with journalists and photographers welcome to come along.
