Dublin beaches to get quicksand warning signs

Quicksand warning signs are to be placed at several north Dublin beaches.

People are being advised not to attempt to walk or swim across Baldoyle Bay, a notorious blackspot for dangerous currents and sinking sand.

Last Friday a teenage boy had to be rescued after clinging to a buoy in the area for half an hour.

Two other boys were also reported getting into difficulty at Cush Point.

All three of them emerged unharmed.

Speaking on 98FM this morning, Social Democrats councillor Joan Hopkins says it’s become more of an issue in recent months as the weather improved and more people from outside the area visited.

“I’ve ordered additional signage from Fingal County Council for three areas; Sutton, Portmarnock and Baldoyle,” she said.

“Burrow Beach in Sutton and Baldoyle Estuary have very strong currents.

“You cannot cross at low tide on foot from one beach to another, it’s too dangerous and you can be caught in quick sand.

“When the tide is out it looks like it’s easy to cross over and it isn’t it’s really, really dangerous.”

Ms Hopkins’ request to Fingal County Council to have warning signs installed at the beaches has been approved by the local authority.
