A marathon effort helps good causes

THE women of Dublin turned out in their thousands to raise money for good causes in this year’s Vhi Women's Mini Marathon over the June Bank Holiday weekend.

Amongst them were hundreds running, walking and jogging their way along the 10k route around the streets of the capital in a mega effort to raise €100,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland.

Finglas was well represented with Liz O Rourke, Sandra Cooper, Lauren Rowan, Teresa Joyce, Gillian Devoy, Amy Graydon, Lorraine Moore, Caroline McGlue and Jacinta and Sheila Valentine.

Almost entirely dependent on public donations for its work, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland will use money raised from the mini marathon to fund vital supports including dedicated cystic fibrosis staff in hospitals and patient support grants in areas such as transplant assessment, fertility treatment, home exercise equipment, counselling and research. 

The campaign comes against a backdrop of Ireland having the highest prevalence of cystic fibrosis in the world – with more than 1,300 people living with the condition in Ireland – and some of the most severe types. 

Meanwhile, staff from local Tesco supermarkets also put in a great effort to raise money for another great cause – Temple Street Hospital.

Tesco later held a celebratory gathering in the city centre to thank its inspiring staff for participating in the mini marathon in aid of its charity partner.
