A NEW campaign aimed at improving amenities around the Royal Canal has been launched in the north inner city by People Before Profit local election candidate Gillian Brien.

Brien is calling on locals to support the campaign to improve street lighting, CCTV and upkeep of the Royal Canal by signing an online petition.

She also claims the area is becoming hostile to local residents, with the cost of living and rents climbing while wages are stagnating.

“More and more people are being priced out of the city as investment is being poured into office blocks and luxury apartments,” she said.

“There are serious questions being raised about the future of Dublin and in whose interest it is being developed.

“We want to combat the spiralling housing crises with public homes on public land but also campaign for reforms aimed at improving the day to day living in the city.”

The ‘Light Up the Canal’ campaign seeks to make public walkways safer and promote exercise.

It also calls for public access to Wi-Fi hotspots, seating areas, drinking fountains, public toilets and other amenities.

The online petition at https://tinyurl.com/LightCanalcalls on Dublin City Council to extend and improve lighting and install CCTV along the Royal Canal.
