History project wants tenement memories
Dublin People 09 Feb 2019
DUBLIN City Council Culture Company is inviting Northsiders to tell their stories and share their memories of tenement life as part of a new oral history project for 14 Henrietta Street.
The project, which aims to capture the living memories of tenement life in Dublin, will run a series of events across Dublin over the coming months, and hopes to connect people and communities with the stories and heritage of the city.
Your Tenement Memories will begin with visits to areas where tenement residents were relocated – including Finglas, Ballymun and Cabra – to talk to people about their memories. There will also be a series of drop-in sessions at 14 Henrietta Street.
Head of Engagement for Dublin City Council Culture Company Aalia Kamal, spoke about the project.
"During these sessions, we will hear stories and collect histories and memories of tenement living,” she said.
“Those who attend can expect a cup of tea and a chance to share their memories.
“So, if you or someone you know has memories or stories to share about what life was like, whether it be the food, the furniture or the games children played, we want to hear them all.
“If you have memories of Dublin’s tenements, if you lived in a tenement, or knew someone who did, maybe you worked in or around the tenement buildings, whatever your connection, Your Tenement Memories would like to hear from you.”
The project team will be visiting Ballymun Library on Wednesday, February 13 from 10am-12pm, Cabra Library on Monday, February 25 (10am-12pm), 14 Henrietta Street on Tuesday, February 26 (10am-12pm) and Finglas Youth Resource Centre on Tuesday, March 19 (10am-12pm).
