Locals raise funds for disease research

CYSTINOSIS Ireland was founded in 2003 with the prime aim of raising funds to support specific scientific research.  

To date they have contributed almost €2 million to groundbreaking work, which has led to a better understanding of the mechanism of the disease and also improved treatments. Members of Ashbourne Golf Club recently took part in a cycle from Ashbourne to Ballybunion for Cystinosis (A2B4C) to raise funds for cystinosis research.  

The 300km cycle by 10 participants raised over €7,000 which will go directly to the lab and start working straight away.

Ashbourne Golf Club members and Cystinosis Ireland would like to sincerely thank everyone who sponsored them and supported them in various ways which made the sometimes arduous cycle much more bearable! 

 A special mention goes to Tony Whyte who organised and led the cycle and photographer Mary Bannon. 

Cystinosis is a genetic metabolic disease that causes an amino acid, cystine, to accumulate in various organs of the body.
