Corduff wins Pride of Place award in Cork

LOCALS from Corduff were celebrating earlier this month after their community was declared winners of the Urban Neighbourhoods category of the Pride of Place awards.

Representatives from the Dublin 15 community picked up the award at a glittering ceremony held in Cork City Hall on Saturday, November 17.

Judges said they were very impressed by Corduff’s Pride of Place presentation during their visit to the area.

“After being greeted by singing from the local school, the judges heard a great story of endeavour, initiative, determination, partnership and achievement to be justifiably proud of,” the judge’s report read.

“The very well attended presentation in the community resource centre, which reflected on the community’s endeavours, and meeting a number of the community groups all created an expectation that our tour of this area would visibly show the fruits of the community’s hard work and drive.

“This community through its resilience and community spirit have managed many major social issues making them a worthy winner.”

Members of the Corduff groups joined with 800 community heroes from across the country at the awards. 

The Pride of Place awards celebrates the often unsung work of community groups that work to make local neighbourhoods a better place to live in, work in or visit. 

The awards sees local authorities, on both sides of the border, nominate outstanding projects that contribute to civic pride.

Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Mick Finn said Cork had a strong tradition of volunteerism and community action and the city was delighted to be partners in the Pride of Place competition.

“The Gala Awards evening is a unique opportunity to celebrate the best in community development and recognises the invaluable efforts of those who glue our communities together,” he added.
