University honours Glasnevin lecturer

A Northside lecturer has been given a prestigious award for ‘Excellence in Teaching’ by Southampton Solent University.

Stephen Desmond, from Willow Park in Glasnevin, has been a senior lecturer at the university for almost 10 years. 

An alumnus of DCU Communications Studies and the University of Michigan, he is currently a PhD student in DCU Communications Studies.

Stephen grew up in Glasnevin and lives in his family home for part of every week. 

The accomplished academic is also a photographer and documentary filmmaker.

He taught in the world-famous MFA in Design & Technology at the Parsons School of Design in New York for many years.

The Film & Media Department at Southampton Solent University has
recently been ranked by The Guardian at number 15 in the UK out of a field of 85 university film and media departments across the country, placing 'Film @
SSU' higher than Goldsmiths and King's College, London.

At the awards ceremony in Southampton, Stephen was especially commended for his work with international students. 

Commenting afterwards, he said: "I am delighted to receive this award which I would like to share with all my students who I care about deeply.”
