Pyrite works are near completion

DUBLIN City Council estimates the final bill for pyrite works on 55 homes in Carton Estate, Ballymun, will be €3.3 million.

The development of 90 dwellings was completed in 2007 but the damaging material was discovered later.

Remedial work is currently being carried out on 50 houses and the council say it has proceeded well. The final phase of works on five homes is due to begin shortly with a planned completion date for the end of October.

“Final costs will not be fully known until completion, but the total works cost of the 55 houses is approximately €3.3 million,” the council said. “Costs of pyrite works are stated as approximate as there are always additional defects encountered that cannot be directly attributable to pyrite, such as a boiler failing to restart and requiring replacement.”

The council say its consultants will soon be in a position to review all aspects of the remediation works and associated costs in the project.

“This will enable DCC to then determine the most cost effective course of action in relation to recoupment of costs incurred by us in the remediation of the Carton Estate,” the council added.

Ballymun local councillor, Noeleen Reilly (SF), welcomed news that the works were near completion but said the council must try and recoup the costs involved.

“Residents had waited years for these works to start and it meant a lot of upheaval as families had to vacate their homes for up to three months,” she continued.

“I’m glad now they are getting back to some sort of normality. “The cost of the works was approximately €60,000 per unit and this was funded by Dublin City Council.

“It is now imperative that the council try and recoup these costs.”
