Local adults prove it’s never too late to learn

NORTHSIDE students from the CDETB Adult Education Centre in Finglas proved age is no barrier to exam success when the Junior Cert results came out last week.

The 23 students range in age from 30 to 80 and together they made up the largest number of adult Junior Cert students getting  their results anywhere in Ireland.

They achieved great results at both higher and ordinary level in subjects such as English, History, Classical Studies, Environmental and Social Studies and Maths. 

So they had lots to cheer about at a special celebration ceremony held in the beautiful surroundings of St Canice’s Church, which was followed by tea and coffee in the parochial hall.

At the ceremony, students spoke movingly about their motivations for learning.

For some, adult education had helped them in the aftermath of bereavement or to cope with the emptiness of retirement, while others compensated for time lost due to childhood illness.

They spoke about their growth in confidence, their love of learning and how much they were looking forward to new challenges.

Awards were also presented to over 120 students for their achievements in QQI. More students than ever are going on to further education and study in places such as Coláiste Ide, Liberties College,  Blanchardstown IT, Tallaght IT, DIT, NUI Maynooth, DCU and the Trinity Access Programme.
