THIS year marks the bicentenary of the Licensed Vintners Association and Powers Irish Whiskey helped mark the anniversary by launching a special, limited edition whiskey in Hedigan’s The Brian Boru, Glasnevin.

Powers 1817 Release is a 10-year-old, single pot still whiskey, a style unique to Ireland and regarded as the truest expression of Irish whiskey – and the special whiskey has been bottled exclusively for Dublin pubs, and is available for this year only.

Powers has been an integral part of the Dublin pub experience since 1791 when founder and publican James Powers set up shop on Johns Lane, off Thomas Street in the heart of the Liberties.

The seeds for the great Powers Distillery were sown and as one of the first Dublin distilleries to bottle in house, Powers chose to work with Dublin publicans.

For the bartenders of many Dublin pubs, their first job would be ‘tapping the barrel’, watching the golden liquid flow into the bottles, careful not to spill a drop.

When the LVA was established in 1817, Dublin publicans became united under one trade association and the organisation and Powers began a shared history.

There has been difficult times but, Claire Henry, Powers Brand Manager, says the history is continuing with the return to the glory days and the new Renaissance of Irish Whiskey in the 21st Century.

“We look forward to this continued journey with the launch of Powers 1817 Release, an exclusive partnership with the LVA in 2017,” she said.
