COMPETITORS travelled from all over Ireland and the UK last month for the TKD Alliance Irish National Championships in the ALSAA sports complex, Dublin Airport.

Hosted by the Airport School of Tae Kwon Do, the event was a massive undertaking for organisers who had to manage over 100 separate categories.

First up were the black belt adults with team and individual patterns. Experience was key here with some exceptional displays of control, power, balance and focus.

This was followed by the black belt sparring categories, including a veterans’ section, where age was no barrier, and the matches were some of the most exciting on the day.

After this, the junior categories began with their patterns and then the sparring. It takes a lot of courage at a young age to step onto the mats and give it your best, which the juniors duly did. More importantly than winning medals (of which there were plenty) the juniors had lots of fun and developed more confidence for competing at national level in the future.

Finishing up the day with style were the adult colour belt sections. Some amazing displays of speed, accuracy and perseverance were shown with all competitors giving 100 per cent.

Congratulations go to all who competed and a huge thank you was given to everybody involved in making the day a safe and fun event for all to enjoy.
