Playground set ablaze
Dublin People 17 Jun 2016
DUBLIN City Council has been asked to investigate the cause of a fire at a playground in a popular Northside park last Thursday.
The fire, suspected to have been deliberately started by vandals, was quickly brought under control by Dublin Fire Brigade who arrived on the scene to tackle the blaze within minutes of being alerted by local residents.
“It was getting really high and with all the trees around it could have been so much worse,” said one local resident.
“Thankfully the fire engine got there so quickly.”
Councillor Noeleen Reilly (SF) praised the fire brigade’s speedy response but said she was disappointed to learn of the incident and called on the council to provide greater security at the park.
“I’ve asked the council to have a look at it and come up with a timeframe for repairs,” she said.
“I’ll be raising it at the Dublin North West Joint Policing meeting also.
“This is not acceptable; so many young families use the park.”
Divided by the River Tolka, Griffith Park is popular with young families in the Drumcondra and Glasnevin areas as well as Northsiders travelling further afield to enjoy the well maintained amenity.
