Clonee United celebrates a decade
Dublin People 17 Jun 2016
CLONEE United FC celebrated 10 years in the community earlier this month with the opening of their new clubhouse in Damastown Park, Dublin 15.
The event was held on Saturday, June 11, and the day culminated with the finals day of the club’s very successful Euro Mini Leagues. Over 300 local boys and girls took part in the week-long football tournament.
Clonee United was set up in the Littlepace area of Clonee in 2006 following an amalgamation of Littlepacers FC and Casta Celtic.
From its humble beginnings of just one team, Clonee United now has 24 teams in total ranging in ages from five-years-old, to a senior team.
Clonee United is also becoming a strong force within the Metropolitan Girls’ league, and has seven girls teams in its ranks.
The grand opening of their new clubhouse facilities was attended by hundreds of local kids and parents. They witnessed all the participants in the mini leagues receive an award for their endeavours.
Clonee United also presented its own teams with awards for the season just completed, which saw two league wins, three runner up spots, one cup win and three runner up cup spots.
Local TD Jack Chambers (FF), local councillor Roderic O’Gorman (GP) and FAI Under 16’s Ladies coach Sharon Boyle all presented awards to some of the Clonee teams.
An award for girls team of the year was presented by Tracy Harris, widow of the late Alan Harris (the drain technician who died last summer), who was a former player of Clonee United.
A brilliant week of football and a decade in the community was thoroughly enjoyed by all at the event and no doubt the next 10 years will bring more success on and off the pitch for Clonee United.
