THERE were lots of ‘yee-haas’ and ‘giddy-ups’ hollered around Dublin Castle earlier this month when pupils from Scoil Ghráinne, Phibblestown, took first prize in a colourful, cowboy-themed road safety event.

The young Clonee crew were taking part in the final of the Road Safety Authority (RSA) ‘Hi-Glo Silver’ poster competition and they totally wowed the expert judges with their entry entitled ‘We’re Keen to be Seen’.

Hi-Glo Silver encourages students in second class to wear bright clothing when they are out walking or cycling.

The local pupils were presented with their awards by RSA Chairperson, Liz O’Donnell and Garda Chief Superintendent Aidan Reid.

“I want to congratulate all of the award winners for their excellent and imaginative art projects that demonstrate their dedication to road safety,” O’Donnell said.

Chief Superintendent Reid added: “On behalf of An Garda Síochána, it is great to be here to celebrate the fantastic efforts being made by schools across Ireland to encourage children to be safe and smart road users.”

It’s not the first taste of success for Scoil Ghráinne this year.

The school has also successfully attained a Digital School of Distinction award for its use of technology.
