DUBLINER Norman Gearon and his pal Alan Carry, from Meath, are on a fundraising mission to help change a little boy’s life.

On April 10, they will be participating in the annual GOAL 10k ‘Great Ireland Run’ in the Phoenix Park to raise some badly-needed funds for Nikki and Derek Lynch and their little boy Tom (3).

Tom has been diagnosed with a syndrome called Hypotonia and Global Development Delay (GDD). The condition results in low muscle tone, reducing muscle strength. If not acted on, it can manifest into many different diseases and disorders that affect motor nerve control and muscle strength.

After much research, Derek and Nikki have now been told that extensive and prolonged therapy carried out in a private clinic in Limerick could make all the difference to their son.

Following detailed assessment, Tom has been accepted as a suitable candidate and will shortly commence the treatment programme. The intensive treatment will be ongoing, arduous and expensive and will entail intense therapy, with Nikki or Derek having to stay with Tom in Limerick for long periods.

Thankfully, the community in his native Kells and beyond have come together and set up a fundraising committee and a comprehensive programme of events is already underway. Visit their Facebook page here

The aim is to raise as much money as possible to help Tom receive the best possible treatment and to give him every chance of being able to walk.

“With your help we can assist this effort,” Norman told Dublin People. “Any funds donated would be very much appreciated.”
