THE Office of Public Works has been presented with a trophy for its service in the welfare, conservation, management and protection of deer in Phoenix Park.

Chief Parks Superintendent, Margaret Gormley, accepted the award earlier this month on behalf of the park’s deer management team.

A herd of Fallow Deer has lived in the Phoenix Park since 1662 when they were introduced by King Charles II. The herd is maintained at about 500.

Deer are an integral part of a complex of ancient pastures and woodlands that are of major historical, ecological and amenity value to the city of Dublin. The John Nicholson Perpetual Trophy was presented by President of The Irish Deer Society, Liam McGarry, and is the society’s highest honour.
