THERE was good news for Northside schools last week when the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club of the Year awards were announced.

St Patrick’s Senior National School in Corduff, Dublin 15, was named Breakfast Club of the Year while St Fergal’s BNS in Finglas was declared best new club at a ceremony in Buswell’s Hotel.

Not only that, but Northsider, Mary Hynes, won the Breakfast Club Hero award for her outstanding contribution to the St Vincent’s GNS club.

St Patrick’s was recognised for the successful efforts made to integrate its multi-national students by hosting culturally-themed breakfasts.

St Patrick’s Breakfast Club Coordinator, Dolores Coote, explained how the club works.

“As well as serving a healthy breakfast to the children each morning, we also offer themed breakfasts for special occasions,” She said.

“Our themed breakfasts play a key part in the school’s Intercultural Week, whereby the children have the opportunity to try foods that represent countries of our vast range of nationalities of the students in our school.”

St. Fergal’s in Finglas was selected as Best New Breakfast Club due to the successful way staff and parents have worked together to provide an invaluable resource for the school’s young pupils and the local community.

“Despite limited resources, the school’s community is rich in spirit and committed to improving the lives of the next generation,” said club coordinator Niamh Forristal.

Mary Hynes was selected as this year’s Breakfast Club Hero due to her remarkable commitment and ongoing dedication to the St Vincent’s club.

“Mary greets every child with a smile and a warm welcome every morning,” said club coordinator Margaret O’Connor.

“She never takes a day off, even when she is unwell. It is Mary who ensures the smooth running of the breakfast club every morning. We are delighted that her work has been recognized as she is a wonderful asset to our school.”
