Smith calls on McEntee to pass Occupied Territories Bill in new Minister role
Dublin People 18 Nov 2025
Labour’s spokesperson on foreign affairs Duncan Smith TD has called on Minister Helen McEntee to do what he predecessor refused to do and enact the Occupied Territories Bill without delay.
Deputy Smith said:
“I want to wish Minister McEntee well in her new post but what awaits her in this new role are a plethora of political choices. I would implore the Minister to make the enactment of the Occupied Territories Bill, including goods and services, her first priority.”
“Tomorrow, opposition Private Members’ Time will be used to debate the crucial need for this legislation to send a strong message internationally that we stand with the people of Gaza. Almost eight years since this piece of legislation was first introduced by Senator Frances Black, it is as important day as it was then to see it enacted.
“We must have a lasting ceasefire and an end to Israel’s genocide on Gaza. Aid agencies continue to face challenges bringing supplies into Gaza, estimating that more than a quarter of a million families need emergency help with shelters.
“Since the horrific attacks of October 7th 2023 and the devastating escalation that followed, the Irish people have spoken with one voice. They have called for a ceasefire, for an end to the killing, and for a just and lasting peace that allows humanitarian aid to flow freely into Gaza. Those calls have been clear and consistent, from the streets to the Dáil chamber.
“With a newly appointed Minister, there is an opportunity now for this Government to respond to the calls of the people, to enact the Occupied Territories Bill and send a clear message to the international community: Ireland will not profit from or enable occupation.”
