HSE launches early diagnosis of lung cancer campaign – #CheckThatCough
Padraig Conlon 15 Aug 2024The HSE is running an early diagnosis of lung cancer campaign in North Dublin, encouraging people to recognise the symptoms of lung cancer and to contact their GP if they have symptoms now or in the future.
Over 2,500 cases of lung cancer are diagnosed each year in Ireland, with almost 13% (1 in 8 cases) occurring in people living in North Dublin.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in both men and women in Ireland with over 1,900 deaths annually.
97% of lung cancer cases are diagnosed in people aged 50 and older. If lung cancer is found early, it’s easier to treat and there is a better chance of survival.
Dr Una Kennedy, a GP working in Phibsborough, and GP Advisor to the HSE National Cancer Control Programme says, “The good news is lung cancer is easier to treat with better chance of survival if found early.
“We want to support people to recognise a potential sign of lung cancer, and contact their GP without delay.
“If you have a new cough that does not go away after 3 weeks or a change to your long term cough, especially if you’re a smoker or former smoker, contact your GP.
“We have Rapid Access Lung Clinics in the Dublin area that have specialist staff and equipment so they can see patients and arrange tests quickly.”
The aim of the campaign is to encourage people who might be experiencing early signs or symptoms of lung cancer now or in the future to recognise them and to contact their doctor.
In pre-campaign research conducted in Dublin, just 1 in 10 people surveyed (12%) identified a persistent cough as a symptom of lung cancer, and less than half of people (45%) said they feel confident they could spot lung cancer symptoms.
The biggest barrier to contacting a doctor about symptoms was thinking ‘it was probably just a cold/flu’ (64%).
The campaign includes ads at bus shelters, poster sites and pharmacy screens across areas in North Dublin, as well as a social media campaign targeting the area.
Ellen O’Dea, HSE Head of Service Health and Wellbeing Dublin North City & County, explains: “We have worked with a wide range of partners and stakeholders in developing this campaign.
“If you have a persistent cough that worries you, don’t delay, contact your GP.
“We are also calling on friends, families and colleagues that if they notice someone has a persistent cough encourage them to contact their GP.
“It’s easy to put it off and say you’ll deal with it another day but why not make today the day you check that cough.”
