Renovation works on Talbot Street in Dublin City Centre are set to begin next week, Dublin City Council says.

According to the local authority, the €2 million project aims to make the area a more “thriving, attractive and safe cityscape” for locals and tourists.

A leaflet given to local councillors says that DCC plans to carry out several “positive interventions” including improving footpaths and public lighting while also introducing additional greenery to a number of “key city centre locations”.

The works are predicted to last 20 weeks and are set to begin on Monday, June 10.

Last year, American tourist Stephen Termini was left with serious injuries after being assaulted on Talbot Street and local business owners have often spoke out about the lack of Garda presence in the area.

Local Independent councillor Christy Burke says the works should be widely welcomed.

“At the end of the day, everybody wants to see the street improved and upgraded,” he says.

“It’ll be the benefit of all when it’s completed in 20 weeks.”

However, Burke says more needs to be done to tackle anti-social behaviour in the community.

“The council should consider introducing a dedicated group of city stewards stationed between Talbot, Henry and O’Connell streets to prevent crime,” he said.
