New community centre for Dublin 7

Dublin City Council has announced proposed plans to re-develop the former Isolation Hospital on Infirmary Road.

The redevelopment will be done in conjunction with McCullough Mulvin Architects, an award winning architectural practice with considerable experience of working with historic buildings both nationally and internationally.

The project offers a beautiful opportunity to re-imagine a fragment of Dublin’s past and repurpose it as an innovative hub for a healthy, vibrant community.

The development involves the refurbishment, alteration and extension of the existing single-storey buildings to provide flexible, high-quality community spaces and the repair of stone boundary walls, gateway, bastion & retaining walls.

The proposal also includes a landscape design that provides a mix of uses, including an external event space, community gardens, a productive allotment garden, a wildlife nature garden and nature-based play areas.

The main entrance will be from Infirmary Road via the existing stone gateway.

To facilitate people arriving from the northern boundary at Montpelier Gardens, a new entrance gate, gentle ramp and steps will connect the new Community buildings in a northerly direction to welcome everyone in and provide universal accessibility.

Dublin City Council is keen to engage with all stakeholders, most importantly residents of the neighbourhoods adjoining this new Community Centre.

Once a contractor is appointed, an information event will be organised where everyone will have the opportunity to view the plans and discuss any queries they may have regarding the development.

Enabling works to allow safe access & survey of the buildings were completed at the end of 2023.

We hope to lodge a planning application for the refurbishment works in the summer of 2024 with construction works due to commence in 2025.

Completion of the works and official opening of the new Community Centre is anticipated for 2026.
