“Do Not Swim” notices issued for two local beaches

“Do not swim” notices have been issued for beaches in Howth and Rush by Fingal County Council.

Claremont Beach Howth and Rush North have both been detected to have elevated bacteria leading to the notices being issued.

In both cases the bacteria is believed to be from animals and birds.

Fingal County Council said in a press release yesterday:

“The EPA has advised Fingal County Council to issue an advisory notice at Rush North following today’s confirmation of elevated bacteria detected in a sample collected on the 22nd of May 2024.

“Fingal County Council are currently investigating the cause of pollution with the most likely source been animal/birds.

“Fingal County Council are resampling the designated bathing area tomorrow and hope to have the advisory notice lifted by the 30th of May 2024.”

In a separate release yesterday, Fingal Council explained the reason for the ‘Do Not Swim’ notice issued for Claremont Beach, Howth.

“Following a result of ‘elevated bacteria’ confirmed today in a pre-season bathing water sample at Claremont Beach, the EPA has advised Fingal County Council to issue a prohibition ‘ Do Not Swim’ notice.

“The likely cause of this elevated bacteria is considered to be from animals/birds.

“The bathing area is been resampled and results of the resample are expected be available on 30th of May 2024, when the prohibition will be reviewed.

“Please note that this is pre-season sampling and the Bathing Season begins on June 1st
