Singh calls for updated law surrounding carers leave

Supriya Singh, Fine Gael Local Election Candidate for Donaghmede proposed a motion at Fine Gael’s recent Ard Fheis that calls for the Carer’s Leave Act of 2001 to be amended to better suit the needs of modern Ireland.

Her motion on “Caring for Those Who Cared for Us” was passed at the Ard Fheis.

In her speech, Singh emphasised the challenges faced by individuals, often women, who have selflessly taken on the role of primary carer while juggling professional obligations.

Her motion called for the Carer’s Leave Act 2001 to introduce paid statutory leave for Carers and to correspondingly support their employers so they can offer flexible work options for caregivers.

“These are crucial steps towards alleviating the financial burden on caregivers, ensuring they can fulfil their duties without risking their livelihoods,” she said.

Reflecting on the significance of the motion’s passage Singh stated said “this motion is important because carers, often women, have dedicated their lives to caring for our elders, ensuring their comfort and dignity in their twilight years. We must recognise their invaluable role and provide them with the support they deserve.”

Balgriffin resident Karen Bebbington said “as someone who cared for their father with dementia, I often struggled trying to balance work and caring for my dad along with caring for my children. Sometimes I needed to take time off at a moment’s notice if he was unwell or his carer wasn’t there and if paid carers leave was available, I would have definitely availed of it as the stress of balancing both working full time and caring had a detrimental impact on my mental health. I think the government should recognise the carers and support them in any way they can.”
