Revenue officers have seized over €12,000 in cash at Dublin Port after stopping two cars travelling out of the country over the weekend.

In a statement, a Revenue spokesperson said that following a routine profiling on Sunday, over €4,300 in cash was detained at the port.

The statement said that the car was travelling to the UK.

On Saturday, officers stopped a car travelling to Romania via the UK and found almost €8,000 in cash. This sum of money was also seized.

In both cases Revenue officers were granted a three month cash detention order at Dublin District Court.

Revenue says that “in both cases, the cash is suspected to be the proceeds of, or intended for use in, criminal activity and is detained by Revenue in accordance with proceeds of crime legislation.

“Investigations are ongoing.

“This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing work targeting smuggling and shadow economy activity.
