Quicksand signs to be installed on North Dublin beaches

Dublin People 17 Dec 2020

North Dublin beaches will be installed with quicksand warning signs in the coming days after a boy had to be rescued last Friday.

The boy was rescued from Baldoyle Bay, a blackspot for unpredictable currents and sinking sand.

It is understood the boy had to be rescued after holding on to a buoy for 30 minutes.

Two other boys also got into difficulty recently at Cush Point but fortunately escaped unharmed.

Local Social Democrats councillor Joan Hopkins said recent mild weather attracted more visitors to the beaches.

Three beaches, Portmarnock, Sutton and Baldoyle meet to form Baldoyle Bay and Hopkins says it is secretly dangerous.

Hopkins said: “They meet and when the tide is out it looks like it’s easy to cross over, it really isn’t, it’s really, really dangerous.

“I’ve ordered additional signage from Fingal County Council for Sutton, Portmarnock and Baldoyle. Burrow Beach in Sutton and Baldoyle Estuary have very strong currents. You cannot cross at low tide on foot from one beach to another, it’s dangerous.”

Fingal County Council has approved Hopkins’ request for additional signage.
