HOMES in Portrane will be lost to coastal erosion if emergency interim measures are not put in place to protect them.

This is according to Labour Party local area representative for Donabate and Portrane, Corina Johnston who said Portrane residents are “very angry” and feel “let down.”

Johnston says she is is calling on Fingal County Council, Minister Darragh O’Brien, the Office of Public Works (OPW) and the National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS), to save the homes at immediate risk due to coastal erosion at the Brook beach, Portrane.

“During the recent public consultation on the long-term coastal protection proposals, residents were informed that the time-line for the implementation of these proposals were at least two years away,” she said.

“A number of residents were also informed that their homes would be lost, according to the consultants’ predictions.

“This is completely unacceptable.

“These homes will be lost if emergency interim measures are not put in place and the families will become homeless.

“Pipers Takeaway and diner and public amenities are also under threat arising from further coastal erosion following recent bad weather events, and will be lost before the long-term works commence.

“Emergency interim measure are urgently needed to ensure these homes, businesses and public amenities are saved.

“Fingal County Council in conjunction with Minister O’Brien and the OPW and NPWS must now provide additional measures to save Portrane, our seaside village.”
