Open House Dublin celebrating architecture next month

Open House Dublin, the annual architecture festival, will take place this year on the weekend of the 8^th – 11^th of October.

With a programme more diverse than ever, this year you will find a reimagined Open House Dublin, with an itinerary of content created in this extraordinary year.

Watch the film premiere of ten commissioned documentary shorts, tune in to a lively topical debate, join a variety of digital tours that peak into the homes of our best architects, get inspired by articles from the inaugural OHD Journal, bring the family to a zoom workshop, build a paper model of your city, take a self guided walk to uncover the remarkable in your everyday.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Una Power, said:

“The Covid-19 crisis has made us re-think about how we engage with our everyday surroundings, our green spaces, our homes, our working environments, and our places of social interaction.”

Highlights of this year’s programme include ‘The Big Debate’ with dlr County Architect and other leading experts debating issues around wellbeing, climate change, and people-centred cities.

An Architect-led bike tour from Sandycove through Monkstown to Blackrock village will highlight new placemaking and public realm initiatives.

A unique series of film shorts celebrating and showcasing Dublin’s architecture features dlr’s Rosemount Court in Dundrum, Pritzker Prize winners Grafton Architects, as well as an aerial tour of Dublin with Niall McCullough.

A free webinar, ‘How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient and Help Build a Sustainable Community’, will help home owners who might be considering a renovation to learn more about energy upgrades in their house, the expected costs, and the benefits.

The expert panel includes two Architects sharing case studies.

It is also an opportunity to hear more about how Sustainable Energy Communities are working together and how to access expertise and financial support from the SEAI.

The Architect-led walking tour of the Marlay Park courtyard restoration will demonstrate work on Protected Structures, and a walking tour of Dublin’s quarrying and stone masonry heritage led by the dlr Heritage Officer will trace a timeline from historic quarrying in the hills and the supply chain to the city, to the contemporary granite stone masonry at Fernhill.

Junior activities for Open House relate to this year’s theme of ‘The Extraordinary Ordinary’ and the programme will include People’s Parkitrek and digital activities for primary school aged children.
