Pubs and clubs are an essential part of student life, be it for socialising or getting some relief from the constant pressures of college. Here are some of the most popular student haunts on the Northside.

1.    The Cat and Cage. Right across the road from DCU’s St Patrick’s College in Drumcondra, the Cat and Cage is nestled right beside a row of restaurants and takeaway outlets – handy for late night snack on the way home. While the food in the Cat and Cage is also great, it is the something for everyone atmosphere that sells this place. Student events are often held upstairs it’s a great spot for watching sporting events.

2.    Quinns. This pub is right in the middle of Drumcondra and always been a popular place for student teachers at nearby St Patrick’s College. While the pub is often packed after a match or concert in Croke Park, if you catch it on a regular Saturday night it is just the right amount of lively.

3.    The Workman’s Club. Further into the city you’ll find the Workman’s Club on Wellington Quay. This is a very popular spot, especially for students who are into indie and alternative music. A cosy spot, the Workman’s Club has its big night on Wednesdays and often hosts live music gigs.

4.    The Bernard Shaw. The newly located Bernard Shaw at Cross Guns Bridge in Glasnevin is full of life, with a bursting calendar of events for all ages. Boasting a cafe-bar, restaurant, art space, Eatyard, music and more, the Bernard Shaw is a welcome addition to the Northside.

5.    DCU’s NuBar. Open to all but beloved by students, it has become a hub for DCU students socialisation in the area. A cosy pub with plenty of seating, once Tuesday night hits it’s all pushed aside and turned into a club atmosphere (be warned, though, these nights are student-only!).
