THE Beaumont Hospital Foundation is organising a special Camino trip in May which extends particular invitation to people who have been treated for breast cancer – either in Beaumont Hospital or elsewhere – and includes instructor-led daily yoga and meditation sessions.

The week long 115km walking challenge (May 16 to 23) is open to anyone but the Foundation is encouraging breast cancer survivors, and those who supported them, to take on this challenge both to mark their recovery and to help future patients through fundraising support for the €1 million Breast Clinic Appeal at the hospital.

The aptly named Pink Camino hopes to recruit 20 participants  to sign-up – either as individuals or as groups – to walk the distance over six days. It will start from the town of Sarria on the French Way to the spiritual epicentre of the Camino, the St James Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

A highlight of the trip will be optional morning yoga and evening meditation sessions, led by highly qualified yoga instructor, Kelly Molloy.

Kelly will guide participants in how to maximise the physical and spiritual aspect of the trip by teaching the benefits of these gentle practices.

Each day the group will walk an average of 20km and the trip cost includes flights, half board accommodation in 3 star hotels and daily luggage transfers.

Training walks will be organised on the weekends before departure so that the group can meet up and improve their walking abilities.

Sheila Campbell, fundraising and communications manager at Beaumont Hospital Foundation, said: “We are inviting people who have had a breast cancer experience to join us. Many people say they’d like to go on the Camino ‘some day’ but why wait?

“This year’s trip is focused on helping people to mark their recovery from cancer by branching out and doing something out of the ordinary and contributing to the Breast Clinic Appeal.”

While the trip will focus on those who have had breast cancer and their families and friends, it is open to anyone interested in supporting improved patient care in any area of Beaumont Hospital.
