Northside hotel donates to three local charities

INSTEAD of giving corporate gifts for Christmas, the Grand Hotel in Malahide decided to donate to charity.

The hotel’s staff and managers gave their suggestions on where the donations should go. 

There were many well deserving suggestions, which were shortlisted to the following charities – Ross Nugent Foundation, Laura Brennan Charitable Trust and Action Ireland Trust. 

All three are local charities, do not receive any State funding and the hotel has had a long standing association with each one, so it was decided to donate €2,000 to all three charities.

Every February, Portmarnock Community School sends Transition Year students, parents, teachers and friends with a cross section of skills in construction, health and education to engage in a programme of work in impoverished areas in countries in Southern Africa. 

Action Ireland will be travelling to Lesotho in February for two weeks with 47 Transition Year students along with teachers, parents and builder volunteers. 

The group is planning to put up a girls’ toilet block at one of the schools. These facilities are currently very poor resulting in the girls regularly missing school. This donation will go a long way towards completing this project next month.

The Laura Brennan Charitable Trust (LBCT) was set up in 2008 to support children up to 18 years-of-age who may be suffering from serious, life threatening or life limiting illnesses in local and surrounding communities. 

This donation will help make a difference, covering up to two weeks’ respite care for a deserving family.

While battling a rare form of cancer called Ewings Sarcoma, Ross Nugent wished that funds would be raised to buy equipment for St Clare’s Oncology Ward in Beaumont Hospital. 

Ross, who passed away in 2010, wanted to make life easier and more comfortable for the patients, visiting relations and nursing staff. 

The Ross Nugent Foundation was set up in his name to carry out his promise. This donation will go towards financing much needed equipment for St Clare’s Oncology Ward.
