‘Clear support’ for retention of Howth hall

A FINE Gael senator believes there is clear support for the retention of a historic parish hall in Howth.

Senator Catherine Noone made her comments following a recent public meeting, where locals expressed their views on controversial plans to sell St Columbanus Hall to fund the development of a new pastoral centre within the grounds of the Church of the Assumption.

Those opposed to the idea want the existing parish centre, which is a 19th century building, to be refurbished instead.

Senator Catherine Noone said: “A large crowd attended and following the discussion it was clear that there was unanimous support for saving St Columbanus Hall for generations of Howth residents yet to come.

“St Columbanus Hall represents a connection to the past for Howth residents and is still a cornerstone of the community, providing space for approximately 30 community groups, ranging from yoga classes to cancer support meetings.”

Senator Noone added: “We also heard from local activists involved in the ‘Save St Columbanus Hall’ campaign who detailed the history and cultural significance of the building. We must continue to fight for the protection of St Columbanus Hall and make sure we secure its future. I am also looking into strengthening the protection level currently given to St Columbanus Hall and have commenced this process, working with both the campaign and Fingal County Council.”
