Gee Wiz! Delight as dog is rescued after cliff fall in Rush

THE Irish Coast Guard team was involved in a canine rescue last week that ended in a happy tale!

On September 10, the team, based in Howth, was tasked to a dog that had fallen from a cliff in Rush.

A cliff rescue team responded, and a climber descended to the stricken family pet.

Wiz, the dog, was out walking when he accidentally stumbled and fell 10 metres down a sharp cliff face along the Rush coast.

A spokesperson for the Irish Coast Guard said: “Wiz's owner did the right thing and did not attempt to climb to the aid of the stranded dog, immediately called 112 and asked for the Coast Guard.

“The cliff rescue team from Howth, along with their colleagues from Skerries Coast Guard unit, were quickly on the scene, and a rescue climber found himself with a life long new friend.”

If you see someone, or someone's pet, in trouble on the cliffs, you are advised not to try climbing to their aid. Instead call 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.

Separately, a parade took place in Dublin city centre last Saturday week to recognise volunteers and groups involved in the emergency services around the country.

The parade, now in its sixth year, is a day of recognition launched by the Government to serve as an official thank you to Ireland’s frontline voluntary and statutory emergency and security services.

Approximately 1,500 people took part in the event. Following the march various services showcased their equipment and skills in a display at Dublin Castle.
