Heavy rain blamed for Dollymount swim ban

Three Dublin beaches have been issued with Bathing Prohibition Notices today, including Dollymount.

Dublin City Council received notification from Irish Water that there has been a significant overflow from the storm storage tanks at the Ringend Wastewater Treatment Plant into the River Liffey in the early hours of this morning.

It said this was as a result of adverse weather conditions and significant rainfall in the Dublin area last night.

The three affected beaches in the city area are Dollymount, Merrion and Sandymount. Dublin City Council consulted with the EPA and the HSE before issuing the swimming ban.

The council said it will continue to monitor water quality at each of these bathing waters and keep the public informed in accordance with the Bathing Water Quality Regulations 2008.

In a statement, the local authority said: “The council regrets this weather-based event and will lift the prohibition notices as soon as the water quality results are at the required standard, in consultation with the EPA and the HSE.

“In that regard, the council notes that season-long bathing water prohibitions are already in place in the case of both Merrion and Sandymount Strands and that these will remain in place.”
