Kilmore initiative is a major success

THE Dublin City Council community team have been working hard over the last number of months liaising with local residents and stakeholders in the Kilmore area in an attempt to breathe more life back into the community.

Madeleine Ebbs, from the city council’s community section, said: “Although there are a good number of long-standing successful community initiatives, there is a definite need to connect everything back up and to improve communication channels in general.
“Out of a number of meetings, the Get Kilmore Going initiative has been born.
“It is becoming an important umbrella group for highlighting relevant issues in the area and exchanging ideas on how best to move forward.
“At present, there is representation from approximately 20 local residents/community activists, Kilmore FC, Kilmore Youth Club, DCC Sports Officers, Kilmore Recreation Centre and local newsagents/pharmacy. There is an amazing energy in this group and the first goal chosen is to enhance and beautify the local area. “The group have decided to do local street clean-ups and have organised a number of residents from each street to lead the initiative for their street.
“They have recently taken part in the Big Dublin Clean Up, which was a major success with over 40 people of all ages taking part and 20 full bags of rubbish collected.”
Ms Ebbs said the public domain section recently installed five pace planters in the local area, which are currently being maintained by group members.
“These planters have really made a big difference and have brightened up the area no end,” she said.
“Other projects included a very successful plant sale, which took place at Kilmore Recreation Centre in June.
“The next step for the group will be to help design and plant a community garden trail in the local area. “
