Progress on a new local amenity is welcomed

A LOCAL councillor has welcomed progress made on a new amenity being proposed for the Northside.

Fingal County Council recently lodged an application with An Bord Pleanala for a new walking and cycling greenway route of approximately 6km in length between Malahide Demesne and Newbridge Demesne in Donabate.

The proposed development will run across the Malahide Estuary adjacent to the mainline railway viaduct and will, if approved, provide an iconic route for walkers and cyclists of all abilities and ages to enjoy this stunning coastal route.

It is expected that it will ultimately connect with the proposed Fingal Coastal Way, a 32km high quality, recreational stretch of greenway connecting Donabate, Rush, Skerries, Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan and Bremore Castle.

Cllr Paul Mulville (SD), who represents the Rush-Lusk Local Electoral Area (LEA), welcomed the announcement.

“The greenway will provide an important environmentally friendly transport alternative to motor travel and will also lead to increased numbers to tourist attractions in the region such as Newbridge House, Malahide Castle, Skerries Mills, Rogerstown Park, Drumanagh, Bremore Castle and Ardgillan Castle,” said Cllr Mulville.

“Prior to the election, my party launched our cycling manifesto for local councils, entitled ‘Safer Cycling for Healthier Communities’.  

“Some of the major focuses include: Increasing Funding for Cycling, Supporting Segregated Cycleways, Supporting Bike Sharing Schemes and Supporting the Construction of Greenways. 

“I have previously supported many of these initiatives on the council and will continue to do so.”
