Grove Lawn Tennis Club celebrates its 60th anniversary in Malahide
Dublin People 20 Jul 2019
GROVE Lawn Tennis Club and Croquet Club is situated within a two-minute walk from Malahide village.
With its immaculately maintained four grass courts and corrugated iron clubhouse, this hidden gem is like stepping back in time.
The club, which celebrated its 60th anniversary on June 15, was founded in 1959 by local woman Kitty Hodges. Over the years it has grown into a vibrant club with over 800 members and the emphasis is on family membership for all.
Chairman Derek Reid and club trustee Gerry Swarbrigg welcomed everyone to the anniversary event, reminding members of the club’s history and confirming how unique and special it is to its members.
No birthday is complete without a cake and it looked amazing, complete with a tennis court and clubhouse which was commissioned for the event.
The day was marked with a members’ tennis tournament followed by an exhibition match between two outstanding under 15 ladies, Lisa Ryan and Aishling O’Connor, Lisa having played at the Grove as a child.
Celebrations continued with a meal and live music by duo ‘Smooth’ with plenty of reminiscing, laughter and dancing into the night. Here’s to the next 60 years!
