IT’S SHOWTIME: Members of Baldoyle Musical Society are looking forward to their latest production. ‘SwCharity’.

ON the 50th anniversary of the release of the iconic movie starring Shirley McLaine and Sammy Davis Jnr., Baldoyle Musical Society is set to delight audiences next week with its production of the musical ‘Sweet Charity’.

It will run for five nights from April 23-27 at 8pm nightly in St Mary’s Secondary School, Baldoyle. Tickets are priced at €15 (€13 for OAPs), and group discounts are available. Bookings can be made on www.baldoylemusicalsociety.ie, or on 085-1378329.

‘Sweet Charity’ is a tender, poignant and often hilarious look at the adventures, or rather the misadventures, in the ways of love encountered by the gullible and guileless Charity Hope Valentine, a dance hall hostess.

The fantastic musical score features such well-known classics as ‘Hey Big Spender’, ‘If They Could See Me Now’, and ‘The Rhythm of Life’.

Audiences will also be wowed by the dazzling dance routines and amazing colourful sets and costumes that have become hallmarks of Baldoyle shows.

Director Paul Fay, a long time performer with the society, returns from a number of years with other groups to direct his first Baldoyle show since ‘Sugar/ Some Like it Hot’ in 2015.

“I am delighted to be back with my home society and have been particularly struck by the energy and enthusiasm which the cast are bringing to the show,” said Mr Fay.

Catherine McCourt, choreographer, has also been impressed by the efforts of the ensemble.

“Our production pays tribute to the wonderful choreography of Bob Fosse which features in the movie,” she said.

“This has been a challenge for the chorus, but they have done a fantastic job mastering his unusual moves. I am confident that the dance numbers are going to hop off the stage!”

Musical Director Carmel Whelan, a Baldoyle local, who joins the society for the first time, completes the production team.

Chairman Karl Hoffman is very enthusiastic about the spectacle that awaits patrons.

“We are very proud that, once again, we have cast the show entirely from within our own membership,” said Mr Hoffman.

“I predict people are going to be amazed at the talent we have on show, right through the singing, acting and dancing, and I look forward to welcoming our audiences next week.”

As ever Baldoyle Musical Society is grateful to the Board of Management and Principal of St Mary’s Secondary School for their support and use of their facilities.
