The Ireland team that competed in India: Michael Creaven, Conor Moran, Sam Buckley, Scott Gillanders and Gavin L’Estrange.

SUTTON Lawn Tennis Club (LTC) were proud to have four of their top squash juniors selected to represent Irish Squash at the Men’s Under 19 World Squash Championships in Chennai, India.

The team comprised three players and two subs, with another player, Scott Gillanders joining the four Sutton LTC  boys – Conor Moran was seeded No.1 with Sam Buckley at No.2, Gavin L’Estrange No.4 (sub) and Michael Creaven No.5 (sub).

Selection is made by performance throughout the entire season and based on ranking points. The Irish team, young and full of enthusiasm, was seeded 14 of the 24 countries in the draw and their pool consisted of No.3 seeds England and 19 seeds South Africa.

Conor, Sam and Scott powered through the match against South Africa finishing second in their pool to make the top 16 draw.

They were unlucky to be drawn against No.4 seeds Malaysia in the next round, an older and more experienced team. The boys gave it their best shot and completed the event at 15th place.

This was a major experience for everyone involved and one they will remember forever.

Meanwhile, Conor Moran has also been selected by the World Squash Federation to join Junior Boys and Girls from around the world to showcase squash at the Junior Olympics in Buenos Aires in October.

Squash has not been officially included in the Olympics to date and
this is an amazing opportunity to show the world the incredible standard and fitness required to compete at this level.
