MEP commends public support for Stardust campaign

A SINN Féin MEP has commended the “overwhelming” public support for a campaign that is seeking a fresh inquest into the Stardust Tragedy.

Lynn Boylan said that since the launch of the ‘Stardust Truth Campaign’ at the beginning of the summer, they have been inundated with requests for postcards from sporting clubs and workplaces across the country.

“The campaign is asking members of the public to sign postcards which urge the Attorney General to exercise his right under Section 24 of the Coroners’ Act 1962 to grant a fresh inquest into the deaths of the 48 people who lost their lives in the Stardust fire,” said Ms Boylan.

“The Stardust tragedy of 1981 is one of those events that will never be forgotten and it is shameful that, 37 years later, the families of those who died have still not received the answers to what happened that awful night.

“I would like to particularly note the bravery of Lisa Lawlor in announcing her support for the campaign. Lisa lost both her parents that night and until now has found it too difficult to partake in any campaign.”

Ms Boylan said the campaign will continue to collect signatures over the coming weeks before handing them into the Attorney General to coincide with the legal application for a new inquest.

If anybody wishes to join the campaign, you can make contact through the ‘Justice for the Stardust 48’ Facebook page.
