IT’S not every day you get your hands on two of the biggest trophies in sport.

The students at St Mary’s Secondary School, Baldoyle, had that honour bestowed on them recently when they welcomed the RBS Six Nations Championship trophy and the Triple Crown trophy.

St Mary’s has been working closely with local rugby club, Suttonians, and the sport was introduced to the school’s second years in 2017.

This year the first years successfully participated in a rugby blitz, winning five of its six matches.

St Mary’s Secondary School would like to thank Aidan Kearney, the community rugby officer, who along with Mr Fennell of the sports department, introduced rugby to the school.

Aidan later took on the role of participation officer for Irish rugby and Stephen Costello, community rugby officer for Leinster Rugby, has since built on the foundations laid by Aidan.

The school was delighted and honoured when Stephen informed them that the famous trophies would visit St Mary’s.

The school was decorated in the national colours and all students were given an opportunity to see the trophies and get photographs taken.

Mr Fennell reminded the girls of the great on-field success of the Irish Rugby team in the 2018 Six Nations.

This was only the third time that the Irish rugby team won the Glam Slam – 1948, 2009 and this year.

Hopefully, the Irish rugby renaissance will continue and Ireland retain all the silverware next year. It was a memorable day and many thanks are due to Leinster Rugby, the IRFU and Stephen Costello.
