Irish Water treats students to plant visit

IRISH Water gave students at a Fingal school the opportunity to visit Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant as part of an initiative with Engineers Ireland.

Regional Information Specialist Annabel Fitzgerald spoke to Donabate CS students at the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant and brought them on a tour of the plant.

During the event an interactive presentation was given on wastewater treatment and the ‘Think Before You Flush’ initiative.

Students also got a tour of the control room to get a behind-the-scenes look at how a plant of that scale operates.

A quiz and an interactive game aimed at helping students understand the role of an engineer in a wastewater treatment plant also took place.

Speaking at the event, Gemma Peat, Chemistry Teacher at Donabate Community School, said: “It is excellent to put what the students have learned in class into a real life situation.

“The presentations and tour at the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant was a great day out and we are delighted to take part in this Engineers Week initiative.”

As part of the initiative, Irish Water will be meeting over 600 students across the county. Its staff are performing some fun water experiments and speaking about their varied career paths and opportunities in engineering and science.

The tour was due to take place during Engineers Week in late February but it had to be cancelled due to Storm Emma.
