Musical society working 9 to 5 on their new show

Nicola Smith (Judy), Kathryn Gibbons (Violet), Karen McCourt (Doralee) and Michael Evans (Franklin Hart Jnr) are looking forward to taking to the stage next week in Baldoyle.

AFTER enjoying sell-out crowds for their pantomime in January, Baldoyle Musical Society is excited to bring its latest production to the stage.

With music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, '9 to 5 – The Musical’ is based on the seminal 1980 hit movie of the same name.

The show runs from April 24 to 28 at 8pm in St Mary’s Secondary School, Baldoyle.

This hilarious story of friendship and revenge is outrageous, thought provoking and even a little romantic.

Pushed to breaking point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss.

In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee, played by Kathryn Gibbons, Nicola Smith, and Karen McCourt respectively, live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot!

While he remains ‘otherwise engaged’, the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down.

Set in the 1970s, the musical confronts some of the attitudes common in the workplace and society in that era, and the empowerment lessons the three women learn are still relevant today.

Damien Hurley, a long time performer with the Baldoyle Musical Society, returns as director following his directorial debut in last year's hugely successful show, 'Seussical- The Musical'.

“It has been a great experience working again with the talented gang in Baldoyle,” said Hurley.

“The group have worked very hard over the last few months and with such a great cast of characters, alongside Dolly Parton's music and great dance numbers, I can assure audiences that this show will jump off the stage. Oh, and watch out for Dolly making a special appearance!”

Trisha McDermott, choreographer, and Dave McGauran, musical director, complete the production team. Chairman of Baldoyle Musical Society, Karl Hoffman, is very enthusiastic about the spectacle that awaits patrons.

“We have enjoyed the challenge that producing this show has presented,” he told Northside People.

“The show features a large chorus, complex set changes, and some spectacular visual effects which we are sure will 'wow' our audiences. We can't wait for opening night.”

Early booking is advised to avoid disappointment. Tickets are available online at www.baldoylemusicalsociety.ie or call 085-1378329. Tickets are priced at €15 for adults, and €12 for concessions, and groups.
