Mitchell backs call for new Stardust inquest

A NORTHSIDE TD has backed a call from the Stardust Relatives and Victims’ Committee for a fresh inquest into the fire which killed 48 people at an Artane nightclub on Valentine’s night 1981.

After attending a press conference, held at Buswell’s Hotel last Friday (April 13), alongside the Victims’ Committee, their legal representatives and Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan, Dublin Bay North TD Denise Mitchell (SF) said she attended the event to show her support for the call by the relatives and friends of those who died on that awful night for a fresh inquest into the fire. 

“For the past 37 years these families have had no justice,” said Deputy Mitchell.

“They have never got the full truth of what happened on St Valentine’s night, 1981. They have been let down by the justice system and by the State.

“The families and their legal team have announced that they have written to the Attorney General urgently requesting an inquest into the deaths be convened.

“We have seen from the North of Ireland and from Britain how fresh inquests can assist in bringing closure and justice to families who have painstakingly waited a very long time for the truth. One example is the Hillsborough disaster.” 

Deputy Mitchell said the Stardust families deserve truth and justice.

“It is time for this Government to do the right thing and order an inquest into this awful tragedy,” she added.
