CCTV extension proposed for the north inner city

A PROPOSAL has been made for the extension of CCTV cameras in the north inner city.

At a Central Area Joint Policing Committee (JPC) meeting last week, Chief Superintendent Sean Ward of Store Street Garda Station presented the proposal.

It includes 12 (and possibly a 13th) CCTV camera locations in the area. The cameras have been assessed, costed and fully funded under the North East Inner City (NEIC) Regeneration Programme.

Local councillor Nial Ring (Ind) described the proposal as a “most welcome” development. 

“Chief Superintendent Sean Ward is to be commended for his work on this proposal,” said Cllr Ring.

“This initiative is both practical and much needed. The fact that the assessment is complete, the costings done and most importantly, the funding secured, is a testament to the commitment of Chief Superintendent Ward and his team to improving the quality of life in the north inner City by tackling the drug dealing problem which is so visible on the streets on a daily basis.

“The locations chosen are those which the public, politicians and the gardai are familiar with as locations where drugs and prescription drugs in particular are openly traded.”

Cllr Ring said the installation of these CCTV cameras is sure to get the message across to dealers that they are being watched and will be prosecuted. 

“I am sure the imminent installation of these cameras will have a positive impact and help get the message across that this type of activity is not acceptable in this community,” he added. 

One of the four strands of the ‘Mulvey Report’ – The Social and Economic Regeneration of Dublin's North East Inner City, is ‘Policing and Crime Prevention/Tackling Crime and Drugs’.

The implementation group has met several times under the chairmanship of Michael Stone. Chief Superintendent Ward is chairing the Policing strand.
