Northside People has officially launched its inaugural Community and Sports Awards 2017.

There are 10 categories across sport and community in total, with an award for the winner of each one – as nominated by our readers and voted on by our panel of judges. In addition, there will be an overall Sports Award and Community Award selected from the category winners. Popular ‘Liveline’ host, Joe Duffy, will be MC on the night.

The launch of the awards was held at the Carlton Hotel, Dublin Airport, who are the host sponsors of the event. Shortlisted nominees will be invited to a Gala Awards Ceremony at the hotel on November 30.

Sponsors confirmed for the awards so far are Jennings Funeral Directors, Acme Blinds, Orchard Fostering, Northside Shopping Centre, Cabra Community Policing Forum, Finglas/Cabra Drug Task Force, Staffords Funeral Homes, Jump Zone and Baldoyle Training Centre DDLETB.

Members of the judging panel include Tony McCullagh, Group Editor, Dublin People; Marion Brown, Principal Sports Officer, Fingal County Council; Laura Dowdell, director, Viking Theatre; and Anthony Cooney, CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber.

Speaking at the launch, Conor Mahon, a director of Northside People, said it was fitting that the awards should coincide with the 30th anniversary year of the newspaper.

“We are the voice of local communities, giving groups and organisations a forum for three decades,” he said.  “We have always been considered the number one newspaper for recognising and celebrating the achievements of local people and hope that these awards will become an annual highlight of our calendar.”

The award categories for sport are: Team of the Year, Outstanding Achievement, Club of the Year, Young Sportsperson and Coach of the Year.

Community categories are: Volunteer of the Year, Young Community Person of the Year, Business in the Community, Community & Neighbourhood Group and Best School in the Community.
