A NEW children’s book set in Balbriggan around the time of the War of Independence was launched last week.

Mayor of Fingal Cllr Mary McCamley launched Brian Gallagher’s book, ‘Pawns’, at Balbriggan Library.

‘Pawns’ is set around the time of the War of Independence and the Sack of Balbriggan, an important historical event which took place in September 1920.

Mr Gallagher said he would not have been able to complete the book without the support of the Fingal Arts Office.

It awarded the Fingal author €2,000 to develop his book. The funding was provided under the 2016 Artists' Support Scheme.

This strand of funding allows professional artists to avail of up to €4,000 of an award towards travel and professional development opportunities, a residency, or towards the development of work.

Also at the launch, the Mayor and Mr Gallagher awarded certificates and medals to the children of Balbriggan who took part in the Summer Stars reading programme.

This single event changed the landscape of Clonard Street and the surrounding areas of Balbriggan town.

Patricia Brady, senior librarian, said she was pleased to have the launch coincide with the presentation of certificates to the children who took part in the summer reading programme.

Ms Brady said having Mr Gallagher and the mayor present certificates gave the children the opportunity to meet a real author, a mayor and the chance to learn some history about the area in which they live.
